About Syklotronsenteret
Norwegian Medical Cyclotron Center AS (Cyclotron Center) develops and produces short-lived radioactive pharmaceutical products for use in medical imaging diagnostics (PET scans).
About the Cyclotron Center
The Cyclotron Center was established in 2003 and is the largest single investment in advanced medical research and diagnostics in Norway. The company was created to develop and produce radiopharmaceuticals for use in PET scans. The Cyclotron Center is currently owned by Oslo University Hospital HF, Akershus University Hospital HF, and the University of Oslo. The company has just over 50 employees and has its production and research facilities at Rikshospitalet in Oslo and research facilities in Oslo University (UiO), with office space in the Oslo Cancer Cluster Innovation Park at Montebello.
In the production facilities, the company has a cyclotron for the production of radioactive isotopes. A cyclotron is a particle accelerator that, with the help of a varying electromagnetic field, accelerates protons, which are shot against atomic nuclei and cause nuclear reactions that lead to the formation of short-lived radioactive isotopes. These can be used to label molecules for production of radiopharmaceuticals. Depending on the types of isotopes involved, the products can be used for diagnostics (PET and SPECT scanning) and radionuclide therapy.
The Cyclotron Center has laboratories for quality control and production of radiopharmaceuticals for use in PET scans. The laboratories meet requirements for pharmaceutical production and radiation protection.
The Cyclotron Center does not perform PET scans itself but supplies radiopharmaceuticals to hospitals in Norway and Sweden. The company accounts for nearly all the production of radiopharmaceuticals used in South-East Health region. Radiopharmaceuticals have a very short shelf life, so local production is necessary.
